Shape and form in bathroom planning

Architectural forms play an important role in the design of a bathroom. Architecture and design are based on certain design and composition principles. One shape that occurs particularly frequently is the square. Learn why this is so and what effect this shape has on people.

Square shapes have a strong presence in interior design. They provide a solid basis for furnishing a room attractively. The square is an important element in architecture and has inspired many designs in the past. Square shapes come into their own in many ways in bathroom design.

Geometric shapes: The square washbasin

Few washbasins are quite perfectly square – but a square washbasin can be an impressive highlight in a modern, minimalist bathroom. When of sufficient size, this washbasin offers enough space to store all the toiletries you use every day. Moreover, this washbasin shape matches the straight lines and surfaces of bathroom furniture perfectly. Square shapes create a balanced sense of space and have a calming effect.

The square WC: Save space in the small bathroom

Square WCs are a good choice for a modern bathroom. Not only do they have an aesthetically pleasing look, but they are also perfectly suited to smaller bathrooms. This is because they take up less space than round or oval models. Standard toilets with a cistern are usually between 60 and 70 cm deep and 40 to 50 cm wide. However, this can become a challenge in a small bathroom. Space-saving solutions are those that use built-in cisterns and smaller toilet models that have a reduced depth and are about 50 cm long.

Large showering area thanks to a square shower enclosure

Square showers are popular in private bathrooms as they give a bathroom a modern, minimalist look. One of the main advantages of a square shower is its functionality: Due to their uniform shape, they are suitable for almost any type of bathroom without taking up too much space. Cleaning is also easy, since they fit in without leaving any empty corners or edges where mould or dirt can accumulate. Another advantage lies in the aesthetics: Square showers are available in a variety of designs and styles – from modern, minimalist designs to illuminated, playful options. This makes it very easy to find a shower that fits the individual style of the bathroom. Another aspect that should not be neglected is the issue of sustainability: A square shower can be equipped with shower heads that offer an economical water flow, so that water consumption – and thus water bills – are reduced. Square showers are also good in terms of accessibility: DIN 18040 recommends a quadratic area of movement of 150 x 150 cm inside the shower.
